About
Birthday celebrations
No outside food is permitted for distribution for student birthdays. If you would like to celebrate your child's birthday in school, please consider donating a book to the classroom library, pencils, erasers, or reading a book to the class.
PE notes
If your child has an injury that prevents him/her from participating in PE class, you must send in a note to school signed by you indicating the injury and how long they need to be excused. A doctor’s note is required for injuries that will be longer than 2 days. Any injury that prevents your child from participating in certain activities will mean that he/she needs to sit out for the entire class. To ensure your child is able to participate, please make sure he/she comes prepared for class on PE days by wearing tennis shoes/sneakers and appropriate clothing for physical activity.
Lost & Found
A lost and found box is maintained in our school cafeteria throughout the school year. Items not claimed are donated to a local charity. Please help keep your child’s belongings out of the lost and found by labeling all garments, lunchboxes, etc., with your child’s name.
Guidelines
Homework
Homework is intended to be independent practice for your child of strategies and skills taught. It is not intended to be time-consuming. If your child becomes frustrated or does not understand the strategies or skills to be practiced, please write a note and send it back with the homework assignment.
Media Center Expectations
Every week each classroom visits the library media center as a class in Creative Arts. In media we teach information technology skills, research skills, literature lessons, and library literacy; how to use a library. Students in grades Pre-K through third grade check-out library books each week. Students in fourth and fifth grade may check out three books every other week; so we may have a longer lesson time. Students have their own school library card. Students are responsible to return their books on time and in good condition. Library lessons on proper book care are taught. It is expected that families will help their child respect the materials checked out and return them in good shape. We understand that accidents can happen and we ask that you encourage your child to talk to the media teacher if something happens. The expectation is if a book is lost or ruined that the family pay for the book so a replacement book can be ordered.
Mission & Vision
PBIS
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports
What Is PBIS?
· A research based, positive behavior management process to create safer and more effective schools.
· A system of clear school wide expectations and incentives.
· Interventions when needed.
· Recognition and celebration of student successes.
Why PBIS?
The staff at William Winchester believe that optimal student achievement both academically and behaviorally can be attained utilizing a proactive system approach for creating and maintaining a safe and effective learning environment. PBIS supports our beliefs. William Winchester has been a PBIS school since 2008.
How Does PBIS Work?
· All students follow the same expectations throughout the building.
· These rules and expectations are displayed throughout the school. When students follow the rules and expectations consistently, they are recognized with verbal praise and a “Roadrunner token” that can be used to shop at our school store.
· When students do not follow the rules, there are planned interventions and/or consequences to help them get back on track.
Our Expectations:
William Winchester’s school wide expectations are divided into 4 behaviors (CARE):
¨ CARING
¨ ACCOUNTABILITY
¨ RESPECT
¨ EFFORT
Expectations are broken down into specific rules for each classroom and area of the school. Behaviors are taught and reviewed continually throughout the school year.
Support PBIS At Home
* Discuss how your child has shown a CARE expectation. (Ex. “You really showed accountability by doing your homework without being asked.”)
*Relate rules at home to our expectations. (Ex. Treating members of the family with respect.)
*Fill-out a “Roadrunner slip for Home” that may be read over our morning announcements.
